Space-Based Solar Power

Space-Based Solar Power

Space-based solar power (SBSP) proposes harnessing solar energy in outer space and transmitting it wirelessly—via microwaves or lasers—to Earth. Operating beyond atmospheric constraints, SBSP systems can generate uninterrupted, high-efficiency solar power regardless of weather or daylight. Key components include orbital photovoltaic satellites, wireless power transmission antennas, and Earth-based rectennas. Recent advances in lightweight solar arrays, microwave beam control, and in-space assembly technologies have brought the concept closer to feasibility. If successfully deployed, SBSP could deliver clean, continuous power on a global scale, making it a potentially transformative solution for energy sustainability and security.
